Speeches, prayers and hymns were the ingredients in a demonstration against the persecution of Christians in Eritrea

”My older brother disappeared eight years ago. Since we have heard nothing, ”he says quietly.

He does not believe that her brother longer alive. He had poor health and would now be mid-70s.

Fecadu Abraha left himself Eritrea for over 10 years ago – and can not enter for the current regime. Contact with the family occurs over the phone, but they can not talk about his brother and his disappearance in the interest of family safety.

Similarly, the three priests pictured at the top of his jersey been missing for nearly 10 years.

Fecadu Abraha, one of up to 150 people that Ascension is gathered for a quiet demonstration in front of Eritrea’s small embassy in London. The country won its independence from Ethiopia in 1993, but it has not brought happiness.

Protesters mark that this is now 10 years since the new country a crackdown on Christian churches. Particularly evangelical and charismatic churches were forbidden and persecuted, while Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox churches still tolerated in the country, where about half the population are Sunni Muslims and half Christians.

The organization Christian Solidarity Worldwide estimated that today there are between 2000 and 3000 Christians who are in prison solely because of their faith.

”All we ask is that they respect our rights. We have not demanded a new government or the president resigns, ”said Berhane Ashmelash, speaking on behalf of refugees from Eritrea.

The most visible person at the demonstration is metropolitan Seraphim, leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Great Britain. He stands under a dark red and golden parasol, as a helper hold over him, despite the fact that it is neither raining or bright sunshine.

He tells of the former Orthodox patriarch of Eritrea, Abune Antonios, who has been under house arrest since 2006.

”He has lost everything. Even the personal gifts he received in Cairo by Pope Shenouda, as his crown and wand taken from him and given to the successor, the government has inserted. They took his car and driver, so he had to go. They have stolen his title and the symbols of his title. But he has retained his respect and his dignity, ”stated metropolitan Seraphim.

    ”ናጽነት ማለት፣  ናጽነት ህዝብን ሃገርን እምበር፡ ናጽነት መሬት ጥራይ ኣይኮነን፡፡ሓደ ካብ ክልቲኡ እንተዘየለ ናጽነት ክበሃል ኣይክእልን ኢዩ፡፡ስለዚ በይኑ ሉኡላውነት ናጽነት መሬት ጥራይ መዓቀኒ ክብርን መሰልን ደቂ ሰባት ክኸውን ኣይክእልን ኢዩ፡፡”  እዚ ወርቃዊ ቃላት እዚ ኣብ ኣርባዓታት ሓርበኛ ኣቦና ኣቶ ወልድኣብ ወልደማርያም ዝበልዎ ኢዩ፡፡ጽሑፈይ በዚ ኣርሒቑ ዝጠመተ ሓቀኛ ትርጉም ናጽነት እየ ክፍልሞ መሪጸ፡፡እቲ ምንታይ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ዘይከም ውዕለቱን ትጽቢቱን 21 ዓመታት ናጽነት መሬት እምበር ክብሪ መሰሉ ኣይተሓለወን፡፡ኣብ ገዛእ ርስቱን መወለዱን መበቆሉን ተጓንዩ እምበር ዋና ኣይኮነን፡፡ ካብ ገዛእ ማህጸኑ ብዝወጹ ብስሙ ንሓሶት ዝመሓሉን ዝጠሓሉን ጨካናት ደቁ ናብ ባርነት ኣትዩ እምበር ሓርነት ኣየስተማቐረን፡፡ናጽነት መሬት ዘምጻእናልካ ንሕና ስለ ዝኾና ከም መሎኮት ኣሚንካ ንግዝኣትና ተቐበሎ፡፡ንሕና ልዕሌኻ ንሓስበልካ፡፡ ስለዝኾነ ንሕና ብዝኣዘዝናካን ብዝበልናካን ኪድ እምበር ንጽቡቕ ይኹን ንሕማቕ ድምጹ ከስምዕ ኣይከኣለን፡፡ 

 
   ናይ መጠረሽታ ድግስ ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ኣብ ትንቢት ዘይኮነ ኣብ ክውንነት ተሞርኪሰ እየ ዝጽሕፎ ዘለኹ፡፡ብኡ መንጽር ኣብ ኩሎም ፍትሒ ይንገስ ምልኪ ይፍረስ ብምባል ቆሪጾም ዝተላዕሉ ደለይቲ ዲሞክራስዊ ለውጢ ውጹዓት ኣማን ብኣማን ሓቂ ዝብል ነጎድጓዳዊ ድምጺ ከም ዝስማዕ ርግጸኛ እየ፡፡ኣብቶም ገለ ከምቲ ሜጀር ጀነራል ገረዝጊሄር ዓንደማርያም ውጩ ኢልዎ ዝበሃል፡ ”ወዲ ኣፎርቂ ነዛ ሃገር ናብ ሃው ዝበለ ጸድፊ ኢዩ ዝወስዳ ዘሎ፡፡ነዛ ዓዲ ይሃንጻን የልምዓን ዘይኮነ ይብትናን የዕንዋን ኢዩ ዘሎ፡፡ንሕና ከኣ ምስኡ ኮይና ኣብቲ ግናይ ኢድ መሊስና ኢና፡፡ ስለዚ ጥፍኣትናን ዕርበትናን ምስኡ ኢዩ”፡፡ ዝበሎ ኢድ ዝመለሱን ኣብ ደም ንጹሃት ዝወዓሉን፡ ደም ዝተጸየቑን ዝነጠሮምን ኣጥፊእካ ጥፋእ ምርጫ ውጩ ከም ዝምእምኦም ዘጠራጥር የብሉን፡፡ እዚ ጽሑፍ እዚ ነቶም ቀንዲ ተዋሳእቲ ኣብ ሽርሕታት ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ተፈራረድ ነብሰ ገርግስ ስለ ዝኾኖም ልኡኽ ወያነ ኢዩ፡፡መጋበርያ ሲ.አይ.ኤ. ኣሜሪካ ኢዩ፡፡ ብምባል ነቲ ኣብ ባይታ ዘሎ ክውንነት ደፊኖም በቲ ዝተኻሕንሉ ሜላ ካዕቦ ሓሶት ንገለ የዋሃት ከደናግሩ ክፍትኑ ኢዮም፡፡የማነ ጸጋም ዝዕቆቡሉን ዝሕብኡሉን ካልእ ስለ ዘየለ ክሳብ እታ ናይ መጠረሽታ ደቒቕ ግብኣተ መቓብር ገባቲ ስርዓት ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ለኻኺሞም ምእንቲ ክጠፍኡ ንኺድ!! ንጽደፍ!! ጥራይ ከምዝጭርሑ ውን ፍሉጥ ኢዩ፡፡ይዋእ’ዮም እቶም ዘሕዝኑ እቶም እናረኣዩ ዝዓወሩን እናሰሙዑ ዝጸመሙን ሕሉፋት ደገፍቲ ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ኢና ዝብሉ ኢዮም፡፡ ኣብ ዘይጭበጥ ናይ ሕልሚ ዓለም ኣትዮም እናሓርነኹ ሞት እዚ ጽዩእ ስርዓት ከም ዝተኣውየ ዘይምስመዖም ኢዩ፡፡ብርግጽ ድማ እዚ ዓማጽን ገባትን ስርዓት ሞይቱ ኢዩ፡፡ እዚ ናይ ጓይላን ዳንኬራን ድግስ ናይ መጠረሽተኦም ኢዩ፡፡መላእ ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ሓመድ ድበ ናይዚ ሞቱ ብዓውታ ዝተኣወየ ገባቲ ስርዓት ከርክብ ኣብ ትንፋስ ዘይህብ ኣዝዩ ቅልጡፍ ጉዕዞ ኢዩ ዘሎ፡፡    

 
     ሎሚ 24 ግንቦት መዓልቲ ናጽነት ኤርትራ ንመበል 21 ግዜ ብልዑል ፈንጠዝያ ንምብዓሉ ተኣንጎት ተሸብሸብ ዝበሃለሉ ዘሎ ናይ ዋዜማ ዕለታት ኢዩ፡፡ ዕስራን ሓደን ዓመታት ናጽነት ብኸመይ ከም ዝሓለፍናየን ድማ ንኹልና ዝተሰወረ ሚስጢር ኣይነበረን፡፡ህዝቢ ኤርትራ መሬታዊ ናጽነት እምበር ፍትሕን ዲሞክራስን ኣይረኸበን፡፡ኣብ ገዛእ ውራዩን ዳሱን ከም ዝተናዕቀ ፍንፉን ለማኒ ኣብ ኣፍደገ ተኾርምዩ እምበር ዋና ኣይኮነን፡፡ ካብ ምቕታልን ምእሳርን ምጭዋይን  ኣየዕረፈን፡፡ወናኒ ፖለቲካዊ ስልጣኑ ኣይኮነን፡፡ካብ ዝኸፈአ ናብ ዝገደደ መዐሙቕ ድኽነት ተሸሚሙ እምበር ምቾት ኣየስተማቐረን፡፡ዝነበረ ዋሕዚ ስደት ብዝተዓጻጸፈ ቀጺሉ እምበር ኣየዕረፈን፡፡ኣረ ኣብ ግዜ እቲ ፈደረሽን ኤርትራ ጥሒሱ ህዝቢ ዘበሳበሰ ዓድታት ዘንደደ ሃጸይ ሃይለስላሰን፡ድሒሩ በትረስልጣን ዝጨበጠ ኤርትራውያን ብሰንሰለት ታንክ ዝዓምጠቐ፡ ነፍሰ-ጸራት ኣዴታትናን ኣሓትናን ብብልሒ ሳንጃ ዝተሳህለ ፋሽሽታዊ ደርግ፡ ዘይተራኣየን ዘይተሰምዓን፡ ኣብ መበል 21 ክፍለዘመን ዓለም ዘደንጸወ ትራጀድያዊ ፍጻመ ሲናይ፡ ዝምታ ውሽጣዊ ኣካላት ኤርትራውያን መናእሰያት ናጽነት ተባሂሉ ኣብ ዝተዘመረሉ ሕጂ ኢዩ ዝፍጸም ዘሎ፡፡ሃገር ናብ ሓንቲ ዓባይ እስርቤት ተቐይራ መላእ ሕብረተ-ሰብ ኣብ ማሕቡስ ዝተዳገነ ሎሚ ኣብ ናጽነት ኢዩ፡፡ ብስም ዘይውዳእ ሃገራዊ ኣገልግሎት መላእ መንእሰይ ኤርትራ ኣብ ዘመናዊ ናይ ባርነት ስራሕ ዝተጸምደ ትማሊ ኣብ ባዕዳዊ መግዛእቲ ዘይኮነ ሎሚ ኣብ  ናጽነት ኢዩ፡፡ 21  ዓመታት ናጽነት ህዝቢ ኤርትራ ዝረገኣ ደም ንውሽጢ እናነበዐ ሓሊፍወን፡፡

    ውሉድ ካብ ወላዲኡ ተፈላልዩ ተበታቲኑ፡፡ዕሸላት ቆልዑ ኣቦን ኣደን ሲኢኖም ዘኽቲሞም፡፡ መናእሰያት ኤርትራ ንምልኪ ውሑዳን ኣብ ዘርብሕ ኣብ ተደጋገምቲ ዘይምኹኑያት ኲናት ኣትዮም ሃሊቖም፡፡ ሰንኪሎም፡፡ መጻኢ ዕድላቶም ተበላሽዩ ኣይ ትምህርቲ ኣይ ስራሕ፡ ኣይ መርዓ ኣይ ደርዓ ኮይኖም ግዚኦም ንብላሽ ባኺኑ፡፡ብዙሓት ካብዚ ዘስካሕክሕ መዓት ንምምላጥ ምድረበዳ ሰሃራን ማእከላይ ባሕርን ውሒጥዎም ኣሰራቶም ጠፊኡ፡፡ቤተሰብ እዚ ኣስካሕካሒ ፍጻመ ሓዘን ከይገብሩ ከየልቅሱ ተኸልኪሎም፡፡ ዕሙራት ስድራቤታት ጸንታ ኮይነን፡፡ ዓድታት ጸምዩ ገረውረው ኢሉ፡፡ኣረ ቀባርን ወራዶ መርዓን መሰነይታ ትስእነሉ ግዜ ተበጺሑ፡፡ ትርጉም ናጽነት እንታይ ምዃኑ፡ ዝተኸፍለ መዳርግቲ ኣልቦ መስዋእቲ ንምንታይ ምንባሩን ድንግርግር ክሳብ ዝብለና ኮይኑ፡፡እቶም ንናጽነት ከም ሓርኢ ተመን ዘናደይዋ ካብ ብሱል ጥረ ኮይኖም ኣብ ዓወት ዝበጽሑ ገዳይም ተጋደልቲ፡ውዕለቶም ተጠሊሙ ማሕዩር ዒራዒሮ ሰፊሮም፡፡ካብ መጀመርያ ናጽነት 1991 ዓ/ም ኣስጋእቲ ዝበሃሉ ተጋደልቲ እናተለለዩ ካርሸልን ካልእ ስዉር እስርቤታትን ዕድመ ልክዕ ናጽነት ብዘይ ፍርዲ ተሞቒሖም፡፡ብዙሓት ካልኦት ሓታቲ ዘይብሎም ሃለዋቶም ተሸሪቡ ሓቒቖም፡፡ ኣሽሓት ኣማኢት ተጋደልቲ ድማ፡ ከቢድ ሞራላዊ ውድቐት በጺሕዎም ኣራእሶም ከምዘድንኑ ተገይሩ፡፡ጠገለ ዝሰኣነ ፍኑው ሓታቲ ዘይብሉ ጉጅለ ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ንመውጋእቲ ከም ስልማት ከም ዘይ ገዓረሉን ከም ዘይ ዘመረሉን ተወጺዕና ናብራ ከቢዱና ተረሲዕና ዝበሉ ስንኩላን ኲናት ተጋደልቲ፡ ሓንቂቕኩም ብምባል ብኣድራጋ ጠያይቲ ተሳሂሉ፡፡ቅንጣብ ገበን ዘይብሉ ንጽህ ህዝቢ ምኽኒታት እናፈጠርካ ኣብ ዘስካሕክሕ እስርቤታት በልዩ፡፡ተቐቲሉ ተጨፍጪፉ ካብ ዓድታቱ ተሓግሒጉ ወጺኡ፡፡ ገለ ካብዚ በላዕተኛ ስርዓት ኣምሊጦም ኣንጻር እቲ ስርዓት ክቃለሱ ደው ዝበሉ ከኣ፡ ህዝቢ መታን ክፍንፍኖም ከዳዓት፡ ሸየጥቲ ሃገር፡ ልኡኻት ወያነ፡ መጋበርያ ኣመሪካ  ዝብል ኣነዋሪ ቅጽል ስም ተጠሚቖም፡፡ ሕድርን መብጽዓን ኣሽሓት ሰማእታት ኤርትራ ምሉእ ብምሉእ ኢሳይያስ ብዝመርሖ ሒደት መላኺ ጉጅለ ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ተመንዚዑን ተጠሊሙን፡፡ብኸቢድን መሰክሕን ዘይጽወር ተግባራት ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ኣብ ዘበነ መግዛእቲ ፋሽሽታዊ ስርዓት ደርግ ዝሓለፍናዮ ሂወት ይሓይሽ ንኽንብል ደሪኹና፡፡እቲ ምንታይ ደርግ ዕላምኡን ጭረሐኡን  ሓደን ፍሉጥን ስለ ዝነበረ፡፡ኤርትራ ባሕሪ ምድራ እምበር ህዝባ ኣየድልየናን ስለ ዝኾነ፡፡ካብ ዝኾነ ገዛኢ ባዕዲ ውን ፍትሒ ርህራሄ ስለ ዘይርከብ ምቕታል ምእሳር ምርጋጽ ምስዳድ ምብትታን ከም ውሁብ ወሲድናዮ፡፡ እንተ ናይዚ ናትና ዝበልናዮን ከም መሎኮት ዝኣመናዮን ሓያል ኮይኑ ንኽወጽእ ኩሉ እንትናና ዝወፈናሉን ግን፡ ስጊንጢር ፍጹም ዘይእመን ኮይኑ፡፡ንዕስራን ሓደን ዓመታት ድማ ”ላም ሓዊ ወለደት” ኮይኑና፡፡

    ሎሚ እዚ ድሕሪ ምፍላይ ካብ ተጋድሎ ሓርነት ኤርትራ፡ ኣብ ዕስራን ሓደን ጽንኩር ናይ ሞትን ውግእን ዓመታት፡ ብደገፍ መላእ ህዝብን ተባዕ ጅግንነታዊ ተወፋይነትን ሓፋሽ ተጋደልትን ናጽነት ዘረጋገጸ ውድብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር፡ ካብ ሕቑፉኡ ብዝወጸ እሾኽ ኣሜኬላ ጫሌዳ ህ.ግ.ደ.ፍ. ዕስራን ሓደን ናይ ባርነት ዓመታት ከም ነሕልፍ ገይሩና ኣሎ፡፡ብሕማቕ ክፍኣተ መጋብር ዝተኻሕነ መሪሕነት ውድብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ዋላኳ ናጽነት ኣብ ምርግጋጽ ወለዶታት ዝዝክርዎ ዘሓብን ታሪኽ እንተሰረሐ፡ንፍትሒ ረጊጹ፡መብጽዓ ስዋኣት ጠሊሙ መላእ ሕብረተሰብ ኤርትራ ንባርነት ስለ ዝዳረገን ኣሽሓት ኣማኢት ንጹሃት ዜጋታትና ብዘይ ፍርዲ ስለ ዝቐንጸለን ዝሸረበን ዝኣሰረን ግን ብዝኸፈኣ ኣብ ጸሊም መዝገብ ክሰፍር ኢዩ፡፡ብዙሓት ገዳይም ተጋደልቲ ህዝባዊ ሓይልታትን ከምኡ ውን ባህርያትን ኣመጻጽኣን እቲ ውድብ ብደቒቕ ዝፈልጡ ገለ ለባማትን ብምልኪ ሓደ ኢሳይያስ ዝምእዘን ውድብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ፍትሓውን ዲሞክራስያውን ህዝባዊ መንግስቲ ክተክል ከም ዘይክእል ብንግህኡ ኣተንቢሆምን ኣሚቶምልናን ኢዮም፡፡ ኣብ ዓዲ እንግሊዝ ኣብ ስደት ዝነብሩ ኣቦይ ሃብተማርያም ኣብርሃ 1991 ሎሚ ጸነትና ሕጂ ዘርእናን መበቖልናን ጠፈአ ኢሳይያስ ዝኸፈኣ መራሕን ቀታልን ዓማጽን ኢዩ፡፡ ምስ በሉ፡ ብዙሓት ከቢድ ጽምኣት ናጽነት ዝነበሮም ኣሕዋት  ሰብኣይ ዓቢዶም ተጸሊሎም ከም ዝበልዎም ዝሰማዕኩዎ ዕላል ኣሎ፡፡የግዳስ ብኸቢድ ጽምኣት ናጽነት ውነና ዘጥፋእናን ዝዓበድናን ዝሰኸርናን እቶም ባህርን ኣነዳድቓን ኣመጻጽኣን ውድብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ዘይንፈልጥ ዝነበርና እቶም ብዙሓት ኢድና ክሳብ ዝደሚ ዘጣቓዕናን  ኢና፡፡ገለ ሓቅታት ዝወዓሉ ካብ ዝበልዎ ዝበልዎ ንምጥቃስ፦
   ተጋዳላይ ኣድሓኖም ገብረማርያም፡ ኣብቲ ብምኽንያት መስዋእቲ ዓሊ ሰይድ ዓብደላን ወፍሪ ዋርሳይ ይከኣሎ ወፍሪ ባርነት’ዩ፡፡ኣብ ዝብል ሻምናይ ክፋል ጽሑፉን፡ ከምዚ ዝስዕብ ሓሳብ ብኑጹር ሰፊሩ ንረኽቦ፡፡ ኣብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ክልተ ዓይነት ተጋደልቲ ኢዮም ነይሮም፡፡
    •    ጸላኢ ዝቐትሉ፡ ጸላኢ ዝማርኹ ተጋደልቲ፡፡
    •    ንኸምኦም ተጋደልቲ ዝቐትሉን ዝኣስሩን ተጋደልቲ ኢዮም ነይሮም፡፡
     እዞም ኣብ ቀዳማይ ጉጅለ ዘለው ተጋደልቲ፡ንሂወቶም ከይበቐቑ ምእንቲ ናጽነት ህዝብን ሃገርን  መዳርግቲ ኣልቦ ከበድቲ ገበናት እቲ ውድብ፡ ተጻዊሮም ነብሶም ረሲዖምን በጅዮምን ብቦምባ ኢድን ካላሽንን ታንክታት ጸላኢ ማሪኾም ናጽነት ዘግዘሙና ኢዮም፡፡

     ብኣንጻሩ እቶም ኣብ ካልአይ ጉጅለ ዘለው፡ሓለዋ ናይቲ ኣብ ስልጣን ዝነበረ መላኺ ጃንዳ ኮይኖም ንንቑሕን ዝተማህረን ዘስግእን ንናጽነት ሂወቱ ከወፊ ዝተጋደለ ንጹህ ተጋዳላይ፡እናሃደኑ ኣብ ዘስካሕክሕ እስርቤታት ኣእትዮም ዝጭፍጭፉን ዝቐትሉን ዘሕቅቑን ዝነበሩ ኢዮም፡፡ከይሰንከሉ፡ ከይተወግኡ፡ ከይተሓንፈጡ ኣብ እንግዳዓ ጀጋኑ ተሓዚሎም ኣብ ናጽነት ዝኣተዉ ኢዮም፡፡በዚ ድማ 24 ግንቦት 1991 ዓ/ም ብሓደ ፍጹም መላኺ ኢሳይያስ ዝምራሕን ምሉእ ብምሉእ ዝዝወርን ውድብ’ዩ ናጽነት ኤርትራ ዝተረጋገጸ፡፡ ላዕለዋይ መሪሕነት እቲ ውድብ ይኹን ሓፋሽ ተጋዳላይ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ነቲ መላኺ  ጉጅለ ክቋጻጸረሉ ዝኽእል ባይታ ይኹን ልጓም ኣይነበሮን፡፡

Evading arrest under gunfire, I fled Eritrea in 2001, arriving in Canada near the end of the following year. More than eight more years would pass before I could bring my wife and children here. They joined me in 2010, after crossing the Sudanese border with the help of a professional smuggler. Others have been less fortunate. More than 30 journalists are imprisoned in Eritrea today.

Eritrea gained independence on May 24, 1993, but for most of us the conclusion of the long and bloody war of independence against Ethiopia two years earlier remains the true moment of liberation. President Isaias Afwerki, a war hero, came to power then, vowing to lead us out of the past. Like most Eritreans, I hoped he would succeed and show the world we were above the corruption and dictatorship that engulfs so many young nations. But today, there is little to celebrate in Eritrea.

Isaias has become a ruthless tormentor of his own people. Eritrea consistently appears at the bottom of any index on press freedom, occasionally trading places with North Korea. There is no independent judiciary. Unions and political opposition parties are illegal, as are peaceful demonstrations and public meetings. A gathering of more than seven people is punishable by law. Only a handful of religions are able to practice their faith. For a decade the regime has enforced its emigration ban with a shoot-to-kill policy at the border. Nonetheless, some 3,000 youths reportedly flee the country each month — our entire population is 5.2 million. According to UN statistics, Eritrea has more per capita refugees than almost any other country.

Ten years after independence, I had become co-founder and editor-in-chief of Setit, the first and largest independent newspaper in Eritrea. Gravely dissatisfied with the way the country was run, I pressed for reforms, asking the government to implement the constitution; to eradicate corruption among the senior ranks of the military; to improve education and health care; and to review land and investment policies. I ran the paper under harsh conditions. Intimidation and threats were a part of life.

In September 2001 Isaias silenced the independent media, shuttering private newspapers and arresting reporters and editors. Several prominent public figures, including former politicians and respected war veterans, all of whom had signed an open letter calling for democratic reforms, were arrested in a series of police raids. By Sept. 25 the authorities had arrested at least 10 reporters and editors. They have remained incarcerated without due process since 2001; five are confirmed dead and no one knows the fate of the others, not even their families.

Some 20,000 Eritreans now live in the Greater Toronto Area. Harassment and fear have followed many of them here. The Eritrean consulate in Canada asks them to provide T4 slips and other Canada Revenue Agency documents as proof of their Canadian income. The government of Eritrea then uses this information to impose an additional 2-per-cent tax on their incomes. Refusal to pay results in the withholding of basic documents such as educational records and birth and marriage certificates. Family members in Eritrea find their applications for business licence renewals declined. Even those who need nothing from the Eritrean government are approached and intimidated by agents of the regime to pay the tax.

The UN has sanctioned Eritrea for its support of Al Shabaab, the insurgent group in neighbouring Somalia with alleged links to Al Qaeda. Last December, a UN Security Council resolution condemned “Eritrea’s use of the ‘diaspora tax’ . . . to destabilize the Horn of Africa region . . . and decided that Eritrea shall cease those practices. It further decided that Eritrea shall stop using extortion, threats of violence, fraud and other illicit means to collect taxes outside of Eritrea from its nationals or other individuals of Eritrean descent.”

The tax continues to be collected, however, and Eritrean Canadians could be forgiven for wondering who governs them here in Canada. The Canadian government must act to create a secure environment for their citizens of Eritrean descent. It must also pressure the Isaias regime to honour basic human rights norms, and to release the incarcerated journalists. When the government of our adopted land is willing to defend these rights, perhaps then we will truly have a reason to celebrate.

In this realm Cohen is Admiral General Aladeen, a composite dictator of typically oil rich North African nation (the fictional Wadiya, slapped more or less on top of Eritrea) who is trying to secretly militarize under the UN’s nose despite being exceptionally incompetent. After his uncle (Sir Ben Kingsley, who seems willing to take any job for money) has him kidnapped and replaced by an imposter, Aladeen is left wandering the streets of New York, trying to find some way to reclaim his place before his beloved Wadiya is turned into a democracy and taken away from him forever.

Review:
Once there was a brilliant comic filmmaker who ignored the typical rules his colleagues played by and produced some of the great film comedies of his time, often poking fun at the social ideas of the world around him. For his first move away from his typical style he decided to take on his largest target yet, a brutal dictator whose protestations of peace were obviously at odds with his actions and who was ripe to be taken down a peg. He concocted a plot wherein he would play both the dictator and the simpleton double who replaces him as the ruler and is sent out into the world he thinks he commands.

Obviously I’m talking about Sasha Baron Cohen’s ”The Dictator.”

Okay, no I’m not. I’m talking about Charlie Chaplin and ”The Great Dictator,” but the surface similarities are obvious. Those similarities end just under the surface, of course, and it should surprise no one that Sasha Baron Cohen is no Charlie Chaplin. What he is, is possessed of a particular genius for social satire which he makes work through a performance artist’s devotion to his act regardless of context. It helps that he picks extremely easy targets, like America’s schizophrenic reaction to homosexuality in ”Bruno.”

He’s picked another in ”The Dictator,” taking a collection of traits of some of the most well known modern tyrants – Hussein, Qaddafi, a little bit of Kim Jong-il – and exaggerating them just enough to be able to ask the question of how could developed nations ever have treatied with people like this as if they were normal, rational individuals?

An easy point well-made is still well-made, even if the target is large, and Cohen and frequent collaborator Larry Charles have shown an understanding that real jokes need real teeth to be truly funny.

The big change this time around is the context. Cohen and Charles have left behind the mockumentary style of their previous efforts, where the jokes mostly focused on making fun of people who did not realize they were being made fun of, and moved into the purely fictional realm.

In this realm Cohen is Admiral General Aladeen, a composite dictator of typically oil rich North African nation (the fictional Wadiya, slapped more or less on top of Eritrea) who is trying to secretly militarize under the UN’s nose despite being exceptionally incompetent. After his uncle (Sir Ben Kingsley, who seems willing to take any job for money) has him kidnapped and replaced by an imposter, Aladeen is left wandering the streets of New York, trying to find some way to reclaim his place before his beloved Wadiya is turned into a democracy and taken away from him forever.

Mostly what it is, is an excuse for Cohen to spout blisffuly offensive statements to everyone around him. This sort of thing worked, more or less, in his previous films because you could believe the reactions of real people when faced with this sort of ridiculousness. ”The Dictator,” fixing more directly to tried and true Hollywood comedic formula, is less successful. Instead of reactions you can believe in, you get people like Zoey (Anna Farris), the absurdly intellectual-feminist-vegan store owner stereotype Aladeen ends up working for and slowly bonding with despite himself.

She, and almost everyone else except former nuclear scientist turned sidekick Nadal (Jason Mantzoukas), let everything Aladeen says and does pass right over them. Because to question the premise would be to end the movie and while Cohen is willing to do almost anything in the name of his craft, being truly original isn’t one of those things.

And even at a zippy sub-90 minutes, ”The Dictator” only has so much satire to go around, with much of it contained in a blistering monologue towards the climax which should make any self-respecting State Department official of the last 15 years squirm uncomfortably.

He’s had to fill the rest of the film with some traditionally American clichés, including Aladeen’s unwilling romance with Anna Faris’ Zoey and a preponderance of low-brow anatomical humor that may or may not be your cup of tea. Cohen’s devotion to going further than the other guy makes even some of his low-brow work arrive on target – particularly a recurring sight gag about a decapitated head – but he misses as often as he hits. And when he misses, he misses WIDE. The resulting film swings rapidly between biting political satire and the worst of Adam Sandler autopilot ”comedies.”

When ”The Dictator” is funny, it’s really funny. And when it’s not funny, it’s really, really not funny. Ultimately, trying to squeeze Cohen’s particular sense of humor into typical Hollywood claptrap is a bit like trying to push a square peg into a round hole, and works about as well.

Cohen’s mockumentary and social satire tastes may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there can be no doubt he knows what he’s about in that milieu. The formula of ”The Dictator” is unfortunately, painfully, not a good fit. Off with its head.

ካብዞም ምስሊ ኣብርሃም ንምትዕብባይ (Image Building) ይካየዱ ካብ ዘለው ላዕልን ታሕትን ገለገሊኦም ከምዚ ዝስዕብ ይግለጹ፡፡ ኣብርሃም ንቻይና፡ ንሊብያን ምስርን ብምልኣኽ ምስ ወዲ ጋዳፊ (ሰይፍ ኣልኢስላም) ተሞኩሮታት ክወስድ፡ ኣብ ምስሪ ከይዱ ንሓደ ሓደ ኣገደስቲ ሞያታት ኮርስ ክወስድ ተላኢኹ፡፡ ድሕሪ’ዞም ሓጸርቲ ኮርሳት ኣብ ሓይሊ ኣየር ተመዲቡ፡፡ ኣብ ሓይሊ ኣየር ናይ ኮማንድ (ኣዛዝነት) ልምምዳት ክገብር ኣብ ማእከላይ ቤ/ጽሕፈት ሓይሊ ኣየር ምስ ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ብምምዳብ፡ ናይ ሓለፍትን ፓይሎትን ሓይሊ ኣየር ልብሲ ወድዩ፡ ከም ገዲም ኣባል እቲ ገዛ ኣብቲ ቤ/ጽሕፈት ዝርከቡ ኩሎም ሰነዳት ከገላብጥ ተራእዩ፡፡

“ፓይሎት ዶ ኮማንደር ኣየንኡ  እንተተሰየመ ይሓይሽ እንድዒ!” ኣብርሃም ካብ ዝጸንሓሉ ሓይሊ ኣየርን ካብ ካልእ ዝተሓርዩ ካልኦትን ብሚስጢር ናብ ዓሻ ጎልጎል ናብ ኮሎኔል ወልዱ ባርያ ሃንደበት ተሳሓቡ፡፡ ኣብርሃም ዝመርሓብ ሚስጢር ኣብ ዓሻ ጎልጎል ዝተኣኻኸበት ጉጅለ ካብ ኤስያዊት ሃገር ብዝመጹ ወጻእተኛታት ተተኮስቲ (ቦምባታት) ንምስናዕ “ፕረዚዳንት” ብዝሓንጸጾ ውጥን መሰረት ስልጠና ተውሃቡ፡፡ እዞም ወጻእተኛታት ነታ ጉጅለ ናይ ምስልጣን ኩንትራቶም ወዲኦም የቕንየልና ተባሂሎም ናብ ሃገሮም ተፋነው፡፡ ድሕሪ ምፍናው’ዞም ወጻእተኛታት “ፕረዚዳንት” ኢሳይያስ ንኩሎም ጀነራላት ብዘይወግዓዊ ናብ ዓሻጎልጎል ብምዕዳም ብበዓል ኣብርሃም ኢሳይያስ ዝተሰንዑ (ዝተፈብረኹ) ሓደሽቲ ፈጠራታት (ተተኮስቲ ቦምባታት) ክዕዘቡ ተገይሩ፡፡ (ዓሻ ጎልጎል ንምሉእ ቀጽሩ ብጽኑዕ ንምሕጻር ፈለማ ብውዕሎ ህዝቢ ክስራሕ ተጀሚሩ ነይሩ ሎሚ ነቲ ቁንጣሮ ዓስቢ ዝረክብ ዝነበረ ህዝቢ ኣልጊሶም ብነጻ ጉልበት ክ/ሰ 525 የስርሕዎ ኣለው)

ካብ ዕዱማት ላዕለዎት ወተሃደራዊ መኮነናት እቲ ምርኢት ወይ ፈጠራ በዓል ኣብርሃም ዘሕደረሎም ስሚዒት ክገልጹ ከለው ገሊኦም “ኣየ ወዲ ኣያይ! ኣንታ ጅግና!ራዛ ናይ ኣቡኡ ሓዛ!” ኢሎም ፈሸኽሸኽ ክብሉ ከለው ገለገሊኦም ጀነራላት ግን ውጽኢት እቲ ሓዱሽ ፈጠራ ይዕበ ይንኣስ በዘየገድስ ስርሓት ኣብርሃም ብዛዕባ ምኻኑ ልዑል ምጥርጣር ኣሕዲርሎም’ዩ። ናቱ ይኹን ኣይኹን በዘየገድስ ግና ዕላማ እዚ ምርኢት ናበይ ገጹ የምርሕ ኣስደሚምዎም ወጹ፡፡ድሕሪ ምውጽኦም ከኣ እቲ ዑደት ከከም ዝፈጠረሎም ስምዒት  ኣብ ደገ ከውሪይዎ ጀመሩ፡፡ካብዛ ግዜ እዚኣ ድማ ሚስጢራዊ ስራሕቲ ኣብርሃምን ጉዳመኛ ውዲቱን ኣብ ስታፍና ተስምዐ፡፡

ድሕሪ’ዚኸ ደኣ’ሞ ናበይ ገጹ ኢዩ? ስዒቡ ዝመጽእ ሕቶ እንድዩ፡ “ካብ ሓደሽቲ ፈጠራታት በዓል ኣብርሃም ገሊኡ ብናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲ ይፈተን!” ዝብል ትእዛዝ ካብ “ፕረዚዳንት” ኢሳይያስ ንወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ወረደ፡፡ ኣዛዚ ሐይሊ ኣየር ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ግና ናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲ ከምዘይብሉን፡ እተን ዝነበራ መቃያየሪ ኣቑሑት ሲኢነን ጠጠው ካብ ዝብላ ነዊሕ ዓመታት ኣቑጺረን ከምዘለዋን ብኣግኡ ከኣ ንተስፋልደት ተሓቢሩ ዛጊት መፍትሒ ከምዘይተረኸቦን ሰጋእ ከይበለ መለሰሉ፡፡  ቀጺሉ ኢሳይያስ “ኣብ ወደብ ዓሰብ ደርግ ሓዲግወን ዝኸደ ዘይተገጣጠማ 4 ናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲ ኣበይ ኣተዋ?ገጢምኩምወን ዶ?” ክብል ሓተቶ፡፡ ኣለዋ፡፡እንተኾነ ነዚአን ንምግጥጣም’ውን ባጀት ተሓቲቱ ስለዘይተፈቕደ ጠጠው ኢለን ከምዝርከባን ባዕልና Assembled ከይንገብረን ከኣ catalog ከምዘይተረኽበንን ኢሉ ገለጸሉ፡፡

ሰብኣይ እንተንቂዱ ዓጋቲ ስለዘይብሉ፡ብቀጥታ ንወልዱባርያ ጸዊዑ ‘ዘን ካብ ደርግ ዝተማረኻ ናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲ ካብ ዝተሰራሓሉ ሃገር ሰብ ሞያ ኣምጺእኻ ንተኽላይ ኣራኽቦ! ክገጣጠማ ግበሩ ብድሕሪኡ ፈትንወን ጸብጻብ ከኣ  ኣቕርቡለይ ክብል ኣዘዞም፡፡

ብተብተብ ተጋጣጢመን ዝተወድኣ ናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲ፡ ንምውድአን ዝምልከት ጸብጻብ ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ናብ “ፕረዚዳንት” ኢሳይያስ ኣቕረበ፡፡ ድሕሪ’ዚ ኢሳይያስ ኣከታቲሉ ሓዱሽ ስርሓት ቦምባታት በዓል ኣብርሃም በዚአን ፈትንዎ ዝብል ናይ ቃል ትእዛዝ ንመ/ጀ ተኽላይ (ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ) ሓበሮ፡፡ ነዚ ናይ ቃል ትእዛዝ ዝተቐበለ መጀር ጀነራል ተኽላይ (ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ)፡ ንሱ ዘይከም ኢሳይያስ፡ ኣብ ትሕቲኡ ንዝርከብ ሓላፊ ወፍርን ስርሒትን በረራ ነፍርቲወተሃደራዊ መኮነን “እዚ ሓደሽቲ ኣብ ሃገርና ዝተሰንዐ ተተኳሲ በዘን ሓደሽቲ ናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲምትኳስ ከምዝከኣል ኣረጋጊጽኩም ግለጹለይ” ዝብል ብጽሑፍ መምርሒ ላኣኸሉ፡፡

ቅድሚ’ዚ ፈተነ እዚ ንሓደሽቲ ቦምባታት ግን ‘ተን ዝተገጣጠማ ናይ ልምምድ ነፈርቲ ናይ በረራ ፈተነ ክግበረለን ተወሲኑ፡፡ ነዚ በረራ ከካይዱ ዝተኣዘዙ ሃፍትሽን ተስፋይ ተኽለን (ክልቲኦም ናይ መጀር መዓርግ ዝነበሮም ኣብረርቲ ኢዮም ዝተሓረዩ) ክልቲኦም ኣብረርቲ ካብ ሃገር ወጻኢ ናብ ግሪኽን ቤላሩስን ብምኻድን ካብ ቤላሩስ ብዝመላለሱ ወጻእተኛታትን ንምስልጣን ንሕድሕዶም ልዕሊ ሓደ ሚሊዮን ዶላር ወጻእ ተገይርሎም ዝሰልጠኑ ኣብ ስራሕ ዓለም ናይ ነዊሕ ግዜ ተሞኩሮ ዝነበሮም ብክእለቶም ካብቶም ኮኾባት ሃገርና እትሕበነሎም ኣብረርቲ ኢዮም ነይሮም፡፡ እዞም ኣዝዮም ምኩራት ኣብረርቲ ክልቲኦም ንሓንቲ ነፋሪት ኣልዒሎም ንፈተነ ንክበሩ ብዘተውሃቦም ትእዛዝ መሰረት በሪሮም፡ ነዊሕ ከይተጓዓዙ ከኣ ኣብ ከባቢ ኣስመራ ሒዛቶም ተሓምሺሻ፡፡ ብብዙሕ ወጻኢታት ዝሰልጠኑ፡ ንሃገር ልዑል ተስፋ ዝተነብረሎምን ኣዝዮም ሙኩራት ኣብረርትና ብሰንኪ ሞያን ክእለትን ዘይብሎም መራሕቲ ህግደፍ  ንዘለኣለም ሲኢኖዮም ኢና፡፡  

ይኹን’ምበር ድሕሪ’ዚ ተረኽቦ እዚ’ውን ከይተረፈ እዚ ጽሉል ሰብኣይ ከይተደናገጸ ዝተሓምሸሸ ይተሓምሸሽ ኣብርሃም ዝሰንዖ ቦምባ ይፈተን ዝብል ትእዛዝ ዘውርድዘሎ፡፡ (ብዋጋ ኣብርሃም ብዙሓት ዜጋታት እንተሃለቑ እንታይ ግዱ፡፡ ብዋጋ ኢሳይያስ ዝሃለቑ ደቂባት’ዛ ሃገር ክንደይ ድዮም?)

ብዝኾነ ካብ መ/ጀነራል ተኽላይ ብጽሑፍ ትእዛዝ ዝበጽሖ ሓላፊ ወፍርን ስርሒትን ነፍርቲ ነዚ ይፈተን ዝተብሃለ ቦምባ ዘረጋግጽ መሳርሕን ዓቕምን የብልናን፡፡ ይትረፍ ሓዱሽ ዘይተረጋገጸ ቦምባ ጺዒና ብዘይ ብኡኡ ኣብ ዝገብርናዮ ናይ ፈተነ በረራ ከማን ኮኾባትና ሲኢና ኣለና፡፡ ሕጂ ኸ እንታይ ክንደግም? ብምባል መለሰሉ፡፡ ናይ ፈተነ ትእዛዝ መን ነጺግዎ ብምባል ንሓላፊ ወፍርን ስርሒትንነፈርቲ ዘጉባዕበዐ ወዲ ኢሳይያስ (ኣብርሃም)፡ ምሳይ ዘዘራርብ የብልካን ምስወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ተዘራረብ በሎ፡፡ ካብዚ ንደሓር እታ ዘረባ ሰበባዶ ኣስጊኣ ዋላ እንታይ ኣይተፈልጠን ሃጢማ ተሪፋ፡፡

ኣብ ውሽጢ ሓይሊ ኣየር ዝነበረ ድራማን መስዋእቲ ብሉጻት ኣብረርትን ኣብ ቀጽሪ’ቲ ሓይሊ ኣየር ተላቢዑን ኣደንጊጹን’ዩ፡፡ እቲ ወረ ውሽጢ ብውሽጢ ተበላሊዑ ሓዱሽ ኩነታት ፈጢሩ፡፡ ብሰበብ እዚ ኩነታት ብኣባላት ሓይሊ ኣየር ዝተልዓሉ ዓበይቲ ሕቶታት በዓል ሃፍትሽ ስለምንታይ ተሰዊኦም? ጠንቂ እቲ መስዋእቲ ከ እንታይ ነይሩ? ሞያዊ ምርግጋጽ ከይተገብረ ስለምንታይ በሪሮም? ናይ’ዚ ሳዕቤን ተሓታቲ መን ኢዩ? ዝብሉ ናይ ኣሰራርሓ ሕቶታት ጥራይ ዘይኮኑ ዓይኒ ብሌን እዚ ሓይሊ ኣየር ዝነበሩ ሰባት፡ መምህራና፡ ሙኩራት ኪኢላታትና ጠፊኦም ድሕረ ሕጂ ዓይንና ነቑርና ዝብል ናይ ተስፋ ምቑራጽ ኩነታት ኣስዒቡ፡፡ እዚ ጉዳይ’ዚ ክሳብ ሕጂ መዓልቦ ብዘይምርካቡ ድማ ብዛዕበኦምን ብዛዕባ ካልኦት ጸገማት ሓይሊ ኣየርን ኣመልኪቶም ኣብ ቀጻሊ ኣኼባታት ሸንኮለል ክብሉ ይርከቡ፡፡
እዚ ሕቶ ኣባላት ሓይሊ ኣየር፡ ንኢሳይያስ ካልእ ኣሻቓሊ ጉዳይ ኮነ፡፡ በዚ ጻርጻር ዝበለ “ፕረዚዳንት” ምስ ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ኣብ ሕማቕ ኩነታት ከምዘለው ተፈሊጡ፡፡ ወዲ ሃብተስሉስ ንኩሉ ነገር ስርዓት ሒዙ ንነብሱ ካብ ተሓታትነት ብዘድሕን ኣገባብ ኣመዛዚኑ  ክኸይድ ዝደልን ዝፍትንን ሰብ ኢዩ፡፡ ኢሳይያስ ከኣ “ወፍሪ ዋርሳይ ይከኣሎ” ሒዝካዮ ደቂስካ፡ ብምኽንያት እቲ ግዕዘይ ምሕደራኻ ብዙሓት ኣባላት (እንኮላይ ብሚሊዮናት ዶላር (ማል) ዘምሃርናዮም ኣብረርቲ) ሃዲሞም  ጠፊኦም እዚ ትካል ኣልቦ ሓይሊ ሰብ ገይርካዮ፡ ሚስጥርካ ተጓሕጊሑ ንቃልዕ ወጽኡ፡ ኩሉ ነገርካ ጽቡቕ የለን ብምባል ከጉባዕበዓሉ ተሰሚዑ ኣሎ፡፡

ስለ’ዚ ኣባላት ሓይሊ ኣየር ኣብዚ እዋን እዚ ኣብ ክንዲ ካልእ ምድላዋት፡ በዞም ቅድም ኢሎም ዝተጠቕሱ ካልኦት በዳህቲ ሕቶታት ንመንግስቲ የዋጥሩ ብምህላዎም፡ ሓይሊ ምድሪ ንባዕሉ ሃገር ንምድሓን ዘኽእል ዓቕሚ ሰብ የብለይን ኢሉ ጠጠው ምባሉ፡ እቲ ዘሎ ገሊኡ ሞራልን ሓቦን ከምዘይብሉ፡ ኣብ ርእሲ’ዚ እኹል ተተኳሲ፡ ሎጂስትካዊ ቀረብ ዘይብሉ ብምኻኑ ብወገን “ጸላኢ” ንዘጋጥም ተጸባኦታት ግብረ መልሲ ንምሃብ ከምዘይከኣለ፡ እቲ ሓይሊ ባሕሪ’ውን እንተኾነ ቅድም ክብል ብበዓል ወዲ መምህር፡ ማንጃብሮ ዝበሃል ሓላፊ ስለያ ሓይሊ ባሕሪን ካልኦትን ብዝፈጠርዎ ብልሽው ተግባራት ዓይነ መርፍኡ ጠፊእዎ ኣብ ዕንክሊል ዘሎ ምኻኑ፡፡

ኣብ ዝሓለፈ ሓበሬታ ዝገለጽኩዎ ኣብ ሞንጎ ኢሳይያስን ላዕለዎት ኣዘዝቲ ሰራዊትን ንዘሎ ሓርፋፍ ርክብ ዘርኢ ኣብ ወርሒ  9/2011 ናብ ኣሜሪካ ቅድሚ ምጋሹ ብዘቕረበሎም ናይ “ጣዕሳ ፖሊሲ” ክቕበልዎ ብዘይምኽኣሎምን፡ ቅድሚኡን ድሕሪኡን’ውን ብተደጋጋሚ ኣብ መንግስታዊ መሓውራት ከካይዶ ዝሓሰቦ ዳግመ ስርርዓት (ተኽሊጥ) ብተቓዉሞታቶም ኣበርዒኖምሉ…ወዘተ ኩሉ ነገር ካብ ድሌታቱን ቁጽጽራቱን ይወጽእ ከምዘሎ ተረዲኡ፡፡  
እዚኦምን ካልኦትን ኢዮም’ምበኣር፡ ሰብኣይ ምስ ዝተገልጸ ሕማሙ ተደማሚሮም ጠረብ ኢሉ ዝወደቑ፡፡ ኣብዚ ክገልጾ ዝደሊ ርግጸኛ ሓበሬታ  ሰብኣይ ኣብ ሓጺር ግዜ ውሽጢ 16 ግዜ ንቀጠር ተመላሊሱ፡ ኣብ ሓጺር ግዜ መገዲ ማይ ዝገበራ ቀጠር ሎምስ እንታይ ከ ይብሉኒ ኢሉ ግዲ ሓኒኹ ሓደ ግዜ ንኣቡዳቢ ብምጋሽ ከብርያ ፈቲኑ ነይሩ፡፡
ድሕሪ’ዚ ቅድሚኡ ከም ኣመሉ ናብ ገጽ ቲቪ ኤረ  ካብ ዝስወር ወርሒ ስለዘቑጸረን ብጽኑዕ ሓሚሙ ናብ ቀጠር ብምኻድ ኣብ ኮማ ስለዝኣተወን ሓሚሙ፡ኣብ ኣፍሞት በጺሑ፡ ሞይቱ፡ ኩዴታ ተገይርሉ፡ ተዓፊኑ፡ ጥዕንኡ ካብ ወዲ 16 ዕድመይበልጽ፡ ዝብሉ ማዕበል ወረታት ክንቀዝፍ ዝቐነና፡፡

ኣብ መጨረስትኡ ግዳ የቕንዮ! “ኣነ ድቃስ ስለዝፈቱ ደቂሰ!”እንተደልየ ንኣዋርሕ ክድቅስ ይኽእል ኢየ ዘስምዕሕክያዝገልጸልና፡፡

• ካልእ ኣጨናቒ ጉዳይ ድሕሪ 2001 ንላዕለዎት መሪሕነት  ውድብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ዝነበሩ ሓያሎ ሰባት (ጉጅለ-15 ዝተብሃሉ መራሕቲ ሰውራ) ምስ ኣሰረ፡ ሰብኣይ እዛ ሃገር ከጥፍኣ ኢዩ በይኑ ክመርሓ ኣይኽእልን ዝብል ናይ ህዝቢ ሓሜት ንምብዳህ፡ በይነይ ሃገር ክመርሕ ይኽእል ኢየ ብዝብል ህልኽ ምንጩ ዘይፍለጥ ብቢሊዮናት ዝግመት ገንዘብ ኣፍሲሱ “ወፍሪ ዋርሳይ ይከኣሎ” ዝብል ናይ ልምዓት ፕሮጀክት ሓንጺጹ ን9 ዓመታት ብነጻ ጉልበት መንእሰያት ከካይዶ ጸኒሑ፡ ብቲቪ ኤረን ድምጺ ሓፋሽን ካልኦት ኤሌክትሮኒክስ ሚዲያታትን ሓያሎ ጎስጓሳት ተኻይድሉ፡ ባዕሉ ሰብኣይ’ውን ወግሐ ጸብሐ ዑደት ክገብር፡ ኢንጅነር ክመስል ናይ ስራሕ መምርሒታት ክህብ ብመስኮት ቲቪ ክረአ ጸኒሑ፡፡ መወዳእትኡ እቲ መደብ ኣይሰመረን ጥራይ ዘይኮነ ርእሰ ማሉ ኣይመለሰን 10 ዓመት ምሉእ ከንቱ ግዜ ሓሊፉ፡ ህዝቢ ምሕማይ ጀሚሩ፡፡

•  ኣብ ምሉእ ዕድመ ሰልጣኑ ቅድምን ድሕርን ናጽነት ዝፈጸሞም ገበናት ካብ ማንም ግዜ ንላዕሊ ሎሚ ንቃልዕ ምውጻእ ጀሚሮም፡፡ ብፍላይ ኣብ ቀረባ ብሓደ ናይ ቀረባ ፈላጢኡ ዝኾነ “ፓይሎት” ብዝብል ሳጓ ዝጽዋዕ ገዲም ተጋዳላይ ብዝተፈላለዩ ማዕኸናት መራኸቢ ብዙሃን ሕቡኣት ሚስጢራት ኢሳይያስን ሕብእቲ ሰልፉን ክድሕድሖም ተሰሚዑ፡፡ ጽልውኡ ድማ ኣብ ኩሉ ዓለማት ንዝርከቡ ኤርትራውያን ብፍላይ ውሽጢ ንዝርከብ ህዝቢ፡ ዓቢ ኣዘራራቢ ጉዳይ ኮይኑ፡፡ ተዓብዒቦም ዝነበሩ ስሚዒታት ገንፊሎም ብምውጻእን ቲሕም ቲሕም ምባልን ተጀሚሩ፡፡ ብፍላይ ኣዴታት ተሰዊኦም እናተብሃሉ ብዛዕባ ዝንገርወን ኩነታት ደቀን ኣብ ኣበያተ ጸሎት (ቤተክርስትያንን መሳጊድን)  መዕለሊ ኣጀንዳ ገይረንኦ ቀንየን፡፡

• ኣብትካላት ህግደፍን መንግስትን ዝሓሰቦ ናይ ዳግመ ስርርዕ ውጥን ብገለገለ ሰበ-ስልጣናት ተሪር ተቓውሞ በርዒንዎ፡፡ ኢሳይያስ ድማ ኣብ ሂወቱ ካብ ዝጸልኦ ጉዳይ ሓደ ምናልባት ቀንዲ’ውን ከይኮነ ኣይክተርፍን፡ ንሓሳባቱ ዝቃወም ሓሳባት ናይ ዘይምጽዋር ባህሪ ኢዩ፡፡ (ንሓሳባቱ ንውጥናቱ ዝቃወሙ ሓሳባት ዘበጋገሱ ዜጋታት ክንደይ እሞ ዘይሓቀቑ)

• ኣብ ዲፕሎማስያዊ ጉዳይ እውን እንተኾነ ብዝኽተሎም ኣጸየፍቲ ቃላትን ተግባራትን ኢሳይያስ ሃገር  ካብ ጎረባብታን ካብ ማሕበረ ሰብ ዓለምን ነጺልዋ፡፡ እንሆ ንክልተ ማዕቀብ ዳሪግዋ፡፡ በዚ ምኽንያት ከኣ ሃለኽቲ ዝበሃሉ መሰረታዊ ጠለባት ህዝቢ ብራሽን ካብ ዝኾኑ ዓመታት ምቑጻሮም ጥራይ ዘይኮነ እቲ ብሪጋ ራሽን ዝዕደል መቑንን’ውን ብፍርቂ ቀኒሱ፡ ሓደ ሰብ ንማዓልቲ ሓንቲ ባኒ ትሽረፎ ኣላ፡፡

• ወርቂ ቢሻ’ውን ዘይከም ዝናኣ ናብ ዕዳጋ ወሪዳ ካብ ትበሃል ዓመት ኣቑጺራ ክነሳ፡ ዋላ ሓንቲ እኳ ዝወሰኸቶ ቀረብ ባኒ የልቦን፡፡ ወርቂ ቢሻ ናበይ ሃጢማ? ዝብል ሕቶታት ከኣ ኣብ ህዝብን ሰራዊትን ኣበጋጊሳ ትርከብ፡፡

ብምኽንያት እዚኣቶምን ሕማም ነድሪ ጸላም ከብድን ዝተደራረብዎ ሰብኣይ፡ ሃንደበት ጠረብ ምስ በለ፡ ባዕሉን ሰበ-ስልጣናቱን ድሕሪ ሕጂ ሂወቱ ኣብቂዓ ኢሎም ተስፋ ቆሪጾም ነይሮም፡፡ ደሓር ሓሲቦም ያኢ ነቲ ወረ ንኣሜሪካ ክስልብጥዎ ፈቲኖም፡፡ ካብ መፈለምትኡ ፈጠርቱን ኣውረይቱን ባዕሎም ኢዮም ነይሮም፡፡ ንኣገባብ ኣበጋግስኡ ከኣ ከምቲ ገለገለ ዝብልዎ 03 ገለ ዶ ዘይኮነ ኦሮማይ ሰብኣይ ወዲኡ ኢሎም ተስፋ ቆሪጾም ስለዝነበሩ’ዮም ኣውሪዮምዎ፡፡ እቲ ሓበሬታ ካብኣቶም ሊሒኹ ኣብ ስራሕና ኣትዩ መን ንመን ከምዝውረየ ይፍለጥ ኢየ፡፡ ልዑል ባህጊ ህዝብና ተሓዊስዎ ከኣ ኢዩ ኣብ ዓለም ተላቢዑ፡፡(ብወገነይ ግን የቕንዮም በሃሊ ኢየ!)

ኣብ’ዚ ተሃዋጺ እዋን ነዚ ጠንቂ ሕማም እዚ ሰብኣይን ኩነታት ጥዕንኡን ንምዝታይ ብኣላይነት ጀነራል ስብሓት ኣብ ላዕለዎት ወተሃደራዊ መኮነናት ቀጻልን ጽዑቕን ኣኼባታት ከካይዱ ቀንዮም፡- (ኣብ’ዚ ኣኼባ በዓል የማነ ማንኪ ተሳቲፎም ዝብል ወረ እኳ እንተሎ ዘረጋገጽኩዎ ግና ኣይኮነን)

ዕላማ እዚ ኣኼባ እቶም እዋናውያን ዝበሃሉን ነቲ ሰብኣይ ናብ’ዚ ኩነት ዘብጽሕዎንበዳህቲ ሕቶታት ቀደም ሰዓብ ሰሪዖም ምዝታይ፡ ንህልውናኻ ዘውሕሱ መፍቲሒታት ምንዳይ ከምዝኾነ ተፈሊጡ፡፡

እዚ ኣኼባ ሰብኣይ ሞተ ዶ ተረፈ እንዳተብሃለ ከሎ’ውን ኣየቋረጸን፡፡ እቲ ዘተ ኣዝዩ ኣከራኻሪ ከምዝነበረን ብዝለዓለ ሚስጥር ክተሓዝ መምርሒ ከምዝተነገረ’ውን ይፍለጥ፡፡ ካብቶም ብህጹጽ ክፍትሑ ዝተዘተየሎም ናይ ቀንዲ ቀንዲ ኮይኑ ኣብ ቀዳማይ ደረጃ ቅደም ሰዓብ ዝተሰርዐ ጉዳይ ንመጥቃዕቲ ኢትዮጵያ እንታይ ግብረ መልሲ ንሃብ?ዝብልኣጀንዳ እኳ እንተነበረ እንታይ ግብረ መልሲ ንሃብ? ዘይኮነ ከመይ ንከላኸል? ብዝብል ዛዕባ ክቕየር ተገይሩ ኢዩ፡፡ ምኽንያቱ ቅድሚኡ ኣብ ዝተገብረ ኣኼባ ላዕለዎት ሓለፍቲ ግብረ መልሲ ብዛዕባ ምሃብ  ዝምልከት ብሓጺሩ ተላዒሉ ኣካታዒ እኳ እንተነበረ፡ ካብ ብዙሓት ተኣከብቲ ብዝኾነ ይኹን መገዲ ብሓይሊ ዝወሃብ ግብረ መልሲ ኣይከኣልን ሰብኣዊ፡ ማተርያላውን ሞራላውን ዓቕሚ ከይሓዝካ ኣብ ዝብጻሕ የልቦን ዝብል ርእይቶ ዓብሊሉ ምውጽኡ ይፍለጥ፡፡

ስዒቡ ሕጂ’ውን ይካየድ ኣብ ዘሎ ኣኼባ (ኢሳይያስ ዘይተሳተፈሉ ኣኼባ ምኻኑ ኢዩ)፡ እዞም ኣይከኣልን ዝብል ርእይቶ ኣብ ቀዳማይ ኣኼብኦም ዘቕረቡ  ኣዘዝቲ ሰራዊት ነጥበ ክትዖም፡ ኩናት ንድለዮ ኣይንድለዮ ዓቕሚ የብልናን ኢዩ ነይሩ፡፡ ኣብ ኣይከኣልን፡ ክትዖም ዘቕረብዎ መረዳእታታት፡ ናይ ሓደ ውግእ ሕመረት፡ መስርዕን ጋንታን ክነሳ ሎሚ መስርዕ ጋንታ ዝበሃል ቅርጺ እኳ ከምዝፈረሰ፡፡እታ 450- 500 ዓቕሚ ሰብ ክትሕዝ ዝግበኣ ቦጦሎኒ 60- 70 ዓቕሚ ሰብ ሒዛ ሎሚ ቦጦሎኒ ጋንታ ኮይና ከምትርከብ፡፡ እቲ ተሪፉ ዘሎ ዝርካቡ ሰራዊት’ውን እንተኾነናይ ውግእ ሞራል፡ ሓቦን ኒሕን፡ ዘይብሉ ሰራዊት ኣሎ ኢልካ ክትዛረበሉ ዘየድፍር  ምኻኑ፡፡ ሎሚ ከም ቀደም ህዝባዊ ድጋፍ የለን፡፡ ወለዲ ኣብ ውሽጢ ሰራዊት ንዝርከቡ ደቆም ኣብ ክንዲ ዝድግፍ ከካብ መሳርዖም ወወጺም ንክስደዱ ዘተባብዑኮይኖም ኣለው፡፡ ስለዚ ሕቶ ግብረ መልሲ ዘይሕሰብ ኢዩ ተባሂሉ ዝሕለፍ ጥራይ ዘይኮነ፡ ተበግሶታት ወያነ እንተቐጺሉዝከላኸል ሓይሊ ስለዘየለ እንታይ ንግበር? ኢና ክንዛረብ ዘለና ኢሎም፡፡

ስለዚ ሕጂ ግበረ መልሲ ንሃብ ዶ ኣይንሃብ ዘይኮነ እቲ መጥቃዕቲ እንተቀጺሎም እንታይ ንግበር ኢዩ መዛረቢና ዛዕባ ክኾውን ዘለዎ፡፡ ቦጦሎኒ ጋንታ ኣብ ዝኾነትሉ፡ ሓይሊ ኣየርና (ናይ ውግእ ነፍርትን መከላኸሊ ሓይሊ ኣየርን) ኣብ ዝተዳኸመሉ፡ ሕጽረት ተዋጋኣይ ዓቕሚ ሰብ ቀንዲ ሕቶ ኣብ ዝኾነሉ፡ ሕጽረት ቀረብ ሎጂስትክስ (ዕጥቁን ስንቁን) ኣብ ዝተኸስተሉ፡ኮታ ኩሉ ብድሆታት ኣብ ዝተደረዓሉ እዋን መጥቃዕቲ ተወሲዶምን እንተጢሒሶምን እንታይ ንግበር? ኣብ ከባቢታት ከረን፡ ዓዲ በጊዖ ዝርከቡ ጎቦታት ዶ ንዓርድ ወይስ ንሳሕልና ንመለስ?ወይ ከኣ ካልእ ናይ ሰላም ኣማራጺ ንኣልሽ?እንተዘተና ይሓይሽ ኣብ ዝብል ዛዕባ ነዊሕ ተዘራሪቦም፡፡

ኣብ መወዳእትኡ በዓል ወዲ ኢፍሬምን ካልኦትን ፈትዮም ጸሊኦም ነዚ ብደሆታት’ዚ ክምክትዎ ስለዘይከኣሉ በዚ ሓሳብ ዝረዓሙ ኢዮም ዝመስሉ፡፡ ብመረዳእታ ካብ ዝተደገፈ ርእቶታት ኣዘዝቲ ሰራዊት ወጻኢ ምዕንዳር ኣይከኣልን፡፡ መቸም ከምዝውረ በዓል ማንኪ ወዲ ማንኪ ኪሻ ወዲ ኪሻ እንተነይሮምዎ እቲ ኣኼባ ሚስጥር ኩናት ኣይፈልጡን፡፡ ዋላ ዕረ ይጥዓሞምም እንኮ ኣማራጺኦም  ክውሕጥዎ ጥራይ ኢዩዘለዎም፡፡

ድሕሪ’ዚ እሞ እንታይ ኣማራጺታት ንሓዝ? ናብ ዝብል ካልእ መፍትሒ ሓሳባት ሃሰው ክብሉ’ዮም ተገዲዶም፡፡
ወያነ ብኮታትና ስለዝመዝመዙ፡ መንግስትና ናይ ምግልባጥ ሕዱር ባህጊ ስለ ዘለዎም፡ “ዓቕልና ጸንቂቕና” ዝብሉ መጠንቀቕታታት ክደጋግሙ ስለዝጸንሑ፡ ንዝወጠንዎ ክፍጽሙ ዝዓግቶም ናይ ውሽጥን ግዳምን ሓይሊክሳብ ዘይሃለወ ድሌታቶም ካብ ምግባር ድሕር ኣይክብሉን ኢዮም፡፡ ጀሚሮምዎ ከኣ ኣለው ዋላ ሓደ ያዕ ዝበሎም ኣካል የለን፡፡ ሓያላት ሃገራት ኣብ ጎኖም ኢየን፡፡ ብቴሌቭዥንን ራዲዮን (ናይ PR ስራሕትና) እነቕርቦም ጎስጓሳት ንጎኒ ገዲፍካ ዓቕሞም’ውን ኣቃሊልካ ዝረአ ኣይኮነን፡፡ብዝረኽብዎ ሓገዛት ዝኣክል ዕጥቂ (እንኮላይ ዘመናዊ ዕጥቂ)ተዓጢቖም ኢዮም፡፡ ንሶምን ካልኦት ምዕራባውያንን (ብፍላይ ስርዓት ኣሜሪካ) መንእሰይ ወለዶ’ዛ ሃገር ብስነ-ኣእምራዊ ኩናት ምፍርራሶም ጥራይ ከይኣክልብኩሉ መዳይ ኣንጻርና ከሰልፍዎ ጀሚሮም ኣለው፡፡
ብሓፈሻ ናይ “ወገን”ቡኮታት፡ ናይ “ጸላኢ” ጥንኩር ጎንታት ፍሉጥ ኣብ ዝኾነሉ ኩነታትከመይ ተዓጻጽፍና ብኮታትና ንዕበስ ዝብል ሓሳብ ኣማራጺ ከምዘይብሉ ተሰማሚዖም፡፡

ድሕሪ’ዚ ደቂቕ ገምጋም ሰበ-ስልጣናት መንግስቲ (ብጀካ ብኣካል ዘይተሳተፈ ኢሳይያስ) ኣብ እዞም ዝስዕቡ ሓሳባት ምስምማዕ ከምዝተበጽሐ እቲ ወረ ናብ ቤት ጽሕትና ይናፈስ ኣሎ፡-

መፍትሒ ኢሎም ዝነደፍዎም 3 ስትራተጅታት እዞም ዝስዕቡ ኔሮም፡-

• ብናትና ሰበብ ናብ ኩናት ከይንኣቱ ልዑል ጥንቃቐ ምግባር፡- ውግእ ካብ ዘበጋግሱ ደቀቕቲ ይኹኑ ዓበይቲ ምንቅስቓሳት ካብ ምግባር ኣሃዱታት ክቑጠባ ትእዛዝ ምውራድ፤ ብናይ ጸላኢ ተብግሶ ንዘጋጥመና ኩናት ንምክላኻል ድማ ቅልጡፍ ምድላዋት ምክያድ፤ ኣሃዱታትናን ምሳና ዝርከቡ ተቓወምቲ ጉጅለታት ወያነን ናብ ኣንፈት ጸላኢ ዝገብርዎ ስልኳታት ጠጠው ከብሉ ምግባር (ነዞም ናይ ወያነ ተቓወምቲ ጠጠው ብዛዕባ ከብሉ ምግባር ግና ኢሳይያስ ዝኣተወሎም ቃል ስለዝነበረ ንሱ ምስ ዝፈቅድ ኢና ጠጠው እነብሎም)፤ ጸላኢ ዋላ ይተኩስ ግብረ መልሲ ካብ ምሃብ ምቑጣብ፡ ጸላኢ ክሳብ ተበግሶታት ዋላ ይውሰድ ምእኩል ዝኾነ ትእዛዝ ክሳብ ዘይተውሃበ ግብረ መልሲ ከይወሃብ ምግባር…ወዘተምናልባት እዚ ኣብ ሰራዊትን ህዝብን ምድንጋር ከይፈጥር ‘’ብመደብና’ምበር ኣብ መኣዲ ጻላእትና ኣይንኣቱን’’ ዝብል መብርሂ ይወሃቦ፤

• ኩናት ኣወጊድካ፡ ሰላም ዝርከበሉ ኣማራጺ ምንዳይ፡-መንግስቲ ወያነ እንተንሓቁ እንተ ንዲፕሎማስያዊ ሃልኪ ምስ መንግስቲ ኤርትራ ናይ ምዝታይ መግለጺታት ክህብ ጸኒሑ፡፡ ብወገና ነዚ ኣብ ዕጹው ማዕጾ ኢና ኣጽኒሕናዮ፡፡ካብ ሕጂ ንደሓር ግን ከርበሓና ኢዩ ኢልና ክሳብ ዝኣመና ዳግመ ግምት ንምግባር ምሕሳብ ከድሊ ኢዩ፡፡ እዚ ሓዱሽን ምናልባት’ውን ዘይግመት ዝነበረነጥበ መቐይሮ ስለዝኾነ ኣብ ካድረታትናን ኣብ ህዝብን እንታይ ስሚዒታት ይፈጥር ይኸውን? እንታይ ድኹምን ጥንኩርን ጎንታት ከ ኣለዎ? ብጥቃቐ ምስትብሃል ከድሊ ኢዩ፡፡

• ነዚክልተ ስትራተጅታት ሓሊፉ ንዝመጽእ ተበግሶታትን መጥቃዕትን እንተጋጢሙ ህዝብና ኣለዓዒልና፡ ዝዓጥቕ ኣዕጢቕና፡ መከላኸሊ ቦታታትና (መስመራትና) ብዝግባእ ኣጽኒዕናን ሓንጺጽናን  ንምክልኻልግቡእ ምድላው ምግባር፡ዝርዝር እዚ ምድላው ኣብ 18- 40 ዕድመን፡ ካብ 41-60 ዕድመ ክሊ ዝርከብ ዜጋ ኩሉ ክዓጥቕ ምግባር፤ ኩሉ ሰራዊት ብሓይልታት ምክልኻል ኤርትራ ብዝወጸ ምእኩል ቅጥዒ (ፎርም) መሰረት ካብ ማእከል ብዝወፈሩ ጉጅለታት ተጻፊፉ ክምዝገብ ብምግባር ህልው ዓቕሚ ሰብና ኩነታቱን ምጽናዕ… ፤ መከላኸሊታትና ኣበይን ከመይን እንተኾነ ይሓይሽ(ኣብ ኣቑርደት፡ ዓዲ በጊዖ፡ ወይ ኣብ ካልእ ኣብ እንተታት ኮይነካ)ቅልጡፍ ጽንዓት ይገበር፡፡ ናብዚ ዝተጸንዐ ቦታታት ኣንሳሒብካ ብድሕሪት ሓይልኻ ኣተኣኻኺብካ፡ ብምድፋር ለኣላዊነቱ ዝነደረ ህዝቢ ጎስጊስካን ወዲብካን፡ ሓይልኻ ዓቂብካ ኣብ ውሽጢ ንዝኣተወ ጸላኢ ንምምካት ብገንኡ ይተሓሰበሉ፡፡ ኣስመራ ናይ ምእታው ሓደጋ ዶ ኣይህልዎን? ዝብል ሕቶ ተላዒሉ እኳ እንተነበረ፡ እንተዘይመኪትናዮም ክኣትው ኢዮም፡፡ ከይኣተዉን ህዝብና ከየበሳበሱን ብገንኦም ንምክልኻል ከም ቀንዲ ስራሕና ክንሕዞ ኣለና፡፡ ምናልባት ነዚ ብገንኦም ናይ ምክልኻል ቀንዲ ውራይና ዝጥሕሱ እንተ መሲሎም ከ ንዝብል ግና ኩሉ ሻዕ ንእንተ ምድላው ስለዘድልዮ ካብ ምስ ኮነ ተብተብ ሕጂ’ውን ከምቲ ኣብ 3ይ ወራር ተወጢኑ ዝነበረ ተቐላጢፍካ ንኩነታት ተረዲእኻ ዝከኣለካ እንዳገበርካ ኣድላይ ንብረትካ እናዳጓዐዐዝካ ንናቕፋ ገጽ ምንስሓብ ኢዩ፡፡ ደሓር ሓይልኻ ኣተኣኻኺብካን ዳግመ ውዳበ ገይርካን እቲ ሕጂ ንህዝቢ ዝዕደል ዘሎ ዕጥቂ ኣወሃህድካን እቲ ወራር ክምከት ምግባር ኢዩ፡፡ ስለዚ እቲ ቀንዲ ተልእኾ እዚ ስትራተጂ ጸላኢ ብገንኡ ንምክልኻል ምድላው እንተ ነዚ ዝሓልፍ ኹነት ተፈጢሩ ከኣ መስርሕ ኩናት ክትደፍእን ክትድፋእን ባህሪያዊ ምኻኑ ኣሚንካ ንኩሉ እንተታት ተዳሊኻ ምጽናሕን ኣብ መወዳእትኡ ከመይ ትምክቶ ምሕሳብን ብልህነት ኢዩ፡፡    

ርእይቶይ፡-

ስለዚ ጉጅለ ኢሳይያስ ነዚ ኩነታት ብቀረባን ብሩሑቕን ጠሚቶም ነዞም ሓደሽቲ ስትራተጅን ስልትታትን ሓንጺጾም ኣለው፡፡ ነዚ ዝተፈጠረ ናይ ለውጢ ማዕበል ከተሃዳድኡን፡ ዕምሪ ስልጣናም ከናውሑን ንኩነታት ኣብ ምስልሳል ቀንዮም ኣለው፡፡

ኢትዮጵያውያን ኣሕዋትና፡ ውሽጦም ከም ውሽጦም ዋላ ምስ ኢሳይያስ ከይተረፈ ናይ ምዝታይ ድሌታቶም ደጋጊሞም ክገልጹ ክንሰምዖም ጸኒሕና፡፡ ኢሳይያስን ጉጅልኡን ከኣ ንተደጋጋሚ ጻውዒት መንግስቲ ኢትዮጵያ ክሕሰምዎ ጸኒሖም፡ ጥራይ ዘይኮነ ኣብ ክንደይ ዓቕሞም ኢትዮጵያ ንምትርማስ ዝከኣሎም ሽርሕታት ከሳውሩ ጸኒሖምን ቀጺሎምሉን፡፡ ብምኽንያት ኣብ ልዕሊ ጎረባብቲ ከካይድዎ ንዝጸንሑ ነውራም ተግባራት ብሕጋዊ መገዲ ዓለም ብዓለማ ኣብ ልዕሊኦም ማዕቀብ ክትብይን ኢትዮጵያ ዲፕማስያዊ እጃማ ኣበርኪታ፡፡ ድሕሪ እዚ’ውን ዘይተምሃሩ ጉጅለ ኢሳይያስ በቲ ዝርድኦም ቋንቋ ኣብ ልዕሊኦም ወተሃደራዊ ስጉምቲ ተወሲዱ፡፡ መልሓሶም ቅልጽም ክትከውን ስለ ዘይከኣለት ከኣ እንሆ ከም ትማል ሎሚ ውን ብሓይሊ ተገዲዶም ነዚ ን8 ዓመት ዝተሓሰምዎ ጻውዒት ዘተ (ሰላም) ክቕበሉ ይደናደኑ ኣለው፡፡

ስለ’ዚ ብወገነይ ነዚ ኣብ ቅንያት ዝነበረ ኩነታት ዘዋዓወዐ ብሓደ ወገን ሕማም እቲ ሰብኣይ፡ ብካልእ ወገን ከኣ እዚ ኣኼባ ላዕለዎት ሓለፍቲ ኣብሓደ እዋን ብምንባሩ ኢዩ፡ ነቲ ብቕንያቱ ዝነበረ ተላባዒ ወረ ኣጋዲድዎ  በሃሊ ኢየ፡፡

The isolated and impoverished country of Eritrea is now the most censored country on the globe, according to new rankingsfrom the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Under President Isaac Afewerki, who has led Eritrea since it wrested its independence from Ethiopia nearly two decades ago, the heavily militarized East African nation has clamped down on dissent. Foreign reporters are shut out. All media are  controlled by the government.

It didn’t used to be that way. Eritrean journalist-in-exile Aaron Berhane published an independent newspaper in Eritrea before the government shut down private media in 2001, angered by criticism of the regime.

Now living in Canada, Berhane publishes a newspaper for the Eritrean community there, providing local news and relaying what information he can from his home country, which suffers from drought and hunger and the constant threat of forced labor imposed by its authoritarian government.

With journalists in the country unwilling or unable to speak out, Berhane talked to The Times about his brushes with censorship in his homeland before he went into hiding and escaped.

Before your paper in Eritrea was shut down, were you threatened for your reporting?

Threats and intimidation were part and parcel of our life. It was very common for me to be summoned to the police station once or twice a week to answer very trivial questions. “Why did you write this? Who was your source?”  Some of the generals called and told you, “Watch it. It is not time to talk about this now.” The intimidation was there all the time. But it was not as open at the beginning.

Once we published an open letter from 15 officials criticizing the president and calling for democratic reform. It was a kind of turning point. It changed the political environment of the country. I was summoned to the police station and interrogated. I was asked, “Who gave you that letter?” And I told them, “What’s the point? The name of those officials are listed at the bottom of the letter.” They said, “No, we want to know who gave you the letter.” They interrogated me for three or four hours just to get the answer, who actually gave me the letter? I didn’t give them any name.

After that the intimidation really increased. One day in September 2001 I wrote an editorial that said many things about the government. When I got home that night around 10 p.m., two security agents were waiting for me in front of my home, in the shadows.

I got out of my car and they came out and approached me. Their faces were covered. One of them put a gun on my chest and he told me, “We came to give you advice.” I asked him, “Who are you?” They said, “We are concerned Eritreans. If you keep criticizing the government, this is going to be your final byline.”

It was very scary. I could feel the tip of the gun on my ribs. I just waited and they told me, “Keep quiet.” And they left.

It was a very scary time, June to September. A week after the World Trade Center was attacked they  shut down all independent newspapers and arrested the senior officials who wrote the open letter. Two days later they came to arrest us.

But as soon as my paper was shut down, I never slept at my home. I was hiding myself. I wouldn’t be seen in any public places where I used to hang out. When they came to arrest me I was not at home. I managed to escape after hiding myself for more than three months — to be exact 104 days.

It was like a prison. I was just staying in one room. I didn’t know what to do. There was no way I could escape because my picture was distributed in all checkpoints. My sources told me not even to try.

All my colleagues were arrested. Finally I managed to flee. Two of us, with the help of a guide, we tried to cross the border. At the border we were encountered by the Eritrean patrolling army. They opened fire. My colleague and the guide were captured. It was only me who managed to escape. As we speak there are 30 journalists in Eritrea in prison now, some from private media, some from government media.

How do you keep up with what’s happening in Eritrea?

It is very difficult. The government deliberately restricts the use of Internet. To send one email it takes forever. People don’t really use the internet as they wish. You can chat a bit, but still it’s not easy. Sometimes you speak using different codes. You try to be creative. But it is always risky for someone who lives in Eritrea to give you some concrete information.

Eritrea is the worst country to be a journalist. There are no journalists now because the journalists who work for the government, they are like civil servants. They can’t operate as journalists. They have to write how they are told to write. One just fled from Eritrea to Ethiopia and he articulated how difficult it is to work as a journalist in Eritrea: ”If you see black and they tell you this is red, you have to put it that way. If you see people are dying with hunger, you can’t write that. Just say they’re doing very well.” The editor cuts all the things that could damage the image of the government. The government is focusing on keeping its image. But it doesn’t care about the life of the people or where this country is headed.

Do you see any possibilities for change?

I am an optimistic person. People are really fed up. They are controlled by this dictator and this regime, so they keep quiet. But the government Is struggling financially. The health of the president is getting weaker. The relationship that he has with the international community and its neighbors is at its lowest stage. We expect to see some results very soon.

Now that you’re publishing a newspaper in Canada, what do you think of the media here?

In Eritrea there is government media and it works for the government. it works to paint a good picture. It is a propaganda machine. And the private media in Eritrea were very dedicated to serving the people; they had very little resources but they were doing amazing work to expose wrongdoings.

In the Western world, there is a public media — here it is CBC — it is not controlled by the government but it is a public media. It serves the people. It is not dominated by advertising. It raises social issues, economic issues and it has educational information which is fantastic. The private or independent media is owned by corporations here. Journalists can write whatever they want, but they don’t seem to want something that could offend the corporations.

How about the coverage of Eritrea — if there is coverage of Eritrea?

Thirty journalists are in prison in Eritrea and you hardly see coverage about what is going on in. Eritrea doesn’t have any economic link with Canada and its population is small, so maybe they assume readers are not interested. But it’s a wrong assumption. People want to know what is going on in the world. You really want the media to speak more about what is going on — not just once or twice a year.
